Illusion of 88 Keys

Lower pitched notes implicate heavier objects to many people.

Many novice pianists are preoccupied with an idea that keys generating lower pitched notes are heavier than the rest of the keys.

Since keys generating lower pitched notes are played by the weakest fingers – left little finger and left third finger, novice pianists tend to develop stiffness in left little finger and left third finger in an attempt to press “heavier” keys with “weakest” fingers.

The matter of fact is the weight of the keys of lowest octave and that of highest octave are the same – illusion of 88 keys.  Further the key weight is so small that piano keys can be pressed effortlessly with any finger.

Playing the instrument with stiff fingers not only inhibits smooth continuous phrasing but also hurts your fingers.

If you are one of those pianists playing the instrument with stiff fingers, you may want to break the habit today.  How?

Here is how.

While on 88 keys, tell yourself that lower keys are as light as higher keys.

Play slowly to make sure that your left little finger and third finger are not stiff.

If you feel even the slightest of unnecessary stiffness, stop and play the same phrase again until you can completely eliminate unnecessary stiffness in your fingers.
